THR reports that Ken Watanabe, known for his work on Inception, Batman Begins, The Last Samurai and his years in Japanese cinema, joins the cast of the live-action Detective Pikachu film. Ryan Reynolds, child actor Justice Smith, and Big Little Lies' Kathryn Newton are all confirmed to star in the film, with production expected to begin next month.
Reynolds will play the voice of Detective Pikachu, whilst Watanabe will play Detective Yoshida. Detective Pikachu is based on the Nintendo 3DS game and sees a less-nimble Pikachu claim he is a great detective who strikes up a friendship with a human to solve crimes.
And people say that original films are a thing of the past in mainstream Hollywood.
