Considering it earned $1.6 billion at the international box office and became the fourth highest grossing movie of all time, it was inevitable that Jurassic World would get a sequel.
What is surprising though is that a threequel already very much in focus for Universal and in particular Jurassic World 2 director, Juan Antonio Bayona. The Spanish filmmaker was at the Toronto International Film Festival to promote his latest film, A Monster Calls when he discussed his next project which he signed up for in April.
“We’re very into Jurassic World right now. It’s very exciting. [Original director] Colin Trevorrow has envisioned a whole trilogy of films. Very ambitious. And we’re writing the second chapter, working very close together,” he said.
Bayona was keeping mum about what we could expect in terms of plot though.
“It’s very exciting. I cannot tell you very much about it, but we are very excited,”
However he did say that the success of the first movie has given him permission to take the world to the 'next level'.
“I feel like the audience has given us permission, to a certain extent, to take this to the next level,” Trevorrow said about the film. “I don’t necessarily mean in scale. I feel very strongly that it’s not about more dinosaurs or bigger and better dinosaurs. It’s about using this as a starting point for a much larger story about our relationship with these animals, and with animals in general, and the dynamic created by bringing them back to life.”
