Earlier this week, Avengers: Infinity War premiered in the US (as it did in Ireland last night) and in attendance were all the stars of the movie as well as Joss Whedon (director of The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron).
Since the event was about all things superhero, the director spoke to Variety about his unmade Wonder Woman script, which leaked online last year (around the time that Patty Jenkins’ hit movie was released in cinemas) and was criticized as a sexist portrayal of the superhero.
“I don’t know which parts people didn’t like, but I went and reread the script after I heard there was a backlash. I think it’s great,” said Whedon, “People say that it’s not woke enough, but they’re not looking at the whole picture.”
While he admitted he was not “the most woke individual who ever lived at that time 10 years ago,” having written his original Wonder Woman script in 2006, he said, “I was in there swinging and the movie has integrity and the characters have integrity and I stand by it.”
At that, Whedon said he loved Jenkins’ movie: “I had such a good time that I didn’t think about my script.
“And I’m the person who should have hated it, because I really loved my script. I totally forgot I had written one, I just had a great time.”
Whedon was attached to direct a Batgirl solo movie back in March 2017. However it was announced last February that Whedon had departed from the project. Whedon said his reason for doing so was that he 'really didn't have a story'.
