With Johnny Depp's proposed starring role as Tonto in The Lone Ranger now a no-go due to the massive budget, the actor is moving ahead with his remake of The Thin Man.

Depp's Pirates of the Caribbean 4 helmer Rob Marshall is directing the film, while famed Hollywood screenwriter David Koepp has been tasked with penning the script. The original film came out in the 30s and follows an alcoholic former P.I. to be played by Depp, and his wealthy heiress wife Nora - they investigate a murder that involves an eccentric inventor and his weird family. I haven’t seen it, shockingly, but it does sound suitably noirish. It'll be interesting to see if Marshall changes the setting, making it more contemporary.

The last Pirates of the Caribbean film was an exercise in endurance. But Marshall can't really be blamed for that - it was a film churned out purely by a studio looking for easy money. Koepp is an excellent writer, and has previously worked with Depp before on Secret Window as well as penning Panic Room and directing the excellent Stir of Echos.
