The Kevin Connolly directed biographical crime drama ‘Gotti’ was released on Friday and critics were, to put it mildly, underwhelmed. At the time of writing, which must be stressed, the movie has a duck egg on Rotten Tomatoes, which is actually quite a rare feat, and an average rating of 2.5 out of 10 from 23 reviews.
Metacritic has given it a slightly more generous 28% from 8 critics.
As we previously reported, the movie has had a rocky road in finding its way to screen. Just two weeks prior to its original release date the distributors, Lionsgate, sold the movie back to its producers. It has now been released by Vertical Entertainment and MoviePass Ventures.
Some of the reviews for ‘Gotti’ have been hilarious. We enjoyed reading this from the New York Post‘s Johnny Oleksinski in particular-
“Gotti flick is the worst mob movie of all-time… I’d rather wake up next to a severed horse head than ever watch Gotti again. The worst movie of the year so far, the long-awaited biopic about the Gambino crime boss’ rise from made man to top dog took four directors, 44 producers and eight years to make. It shows. The finished product belongs in a cement bucket at the bottom of the river.”
"He may have been a murderer, but even Gotti deserved better than this," said Brian Tallerico from rogerebert.com.
While Jordan Mintzer of the Hollywood Reporter had this to say- "...it's not only that the film is pretty terrible: poorly written, devoid of tension, ridiculous in spots and just plain dull in others. But the fact that it mostly portrays John Gotti as a loving family man and altogether likable guy, and his son John Gotti Jr. as a victim of government persecution, may be a first in the history of the genre.”
‘Gotti’ also stars Travolta’s wife Kelly Preston, Stacey Keach and Pruitt Taylor Vince.
Yeah, maybe give this one a miss.
