Somewhere, Spike Jonze just died a little inside.
'Jexi', if the first trailer is anything to go by, is what happens when the writers of 'The Hangover' and the writing/directing team behind 'Bad Moms' watch Jonze's 2013 critically-acclaimed 'Her' and ask themselves "How can we do this, but worse?" and no one is around to stop them.
Starring Adam Devine, who we guess is relegated to stereotypical movie roles like this now, and the voice of Rose Byrne (a criminally underrated and underutilised comedy actress), it's basically every bad comedy of the 2010s (see 'Bad Moms', 'Life of the Party', 'Sisters' and pretty much all of Netflix's ventures) but this time the gimmick is artificial intelligence because 2019.
Here's the official synopsis:
Phil (Adam Devine) has a major dependency issue - he’s addicted to his phone. He has no friends, he has a job writing pop culture “Top 10” lists, and his love life is non-existent. But his Facebook status is about to change. When he is forced to upgrade his phone, the latest model comes with an unexpected feature... Jexi (Rose Byrne) – an A.I. life coach, virtual assistant and cheerleader. With her help, Phil begins to get a real life. But as he becomes less dependent on his phone, Jexi’s artificial intelligence morphs into a tech nightmare determined to keep Phil all to herself, even if it means ruining his chances of finding success.
'Jexi' is set for release in US cinemas on October 11th, with an Irish release date to be announced.
