Announced late last night, Jason Reitman - son of original director Ivan Reitman - is now working on a direct sequel to 'Ghostbusters 2' and has it slated for release during the summer of 2020.
The movie, which doesn't yet have an official title, will see the younger Reitman - primarily known for indie hits such as 'Up In The Air', 'Tully' and this year's 'The Front Runner' - take over the director's chair from his father. Speaking to EW, Reitman explained that the movie is a direct sequel to 'Ghostbusters 2', and describes himself as the movie's "first fan."
"This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day," said Reitman. He went on, adding that "(this) is very early, and I want the film to unwrap like a present. We have a lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet."
There's been no word yet on whether or not Bill Murray, Rick Moranis or Dan Aykroyd are involved with the production, or any casting at all for that matter. All that's known so far is that Reitman is directing and has penned a script with Gil Kenan, who wrote 'Monster House' and directed the not-actually-that-bad 'Poltergeist' remake.
On the topic of Paul Feig's ill-fated all-female reboot, Reitman said that while he has "so much respect for what Paul created with those brilliant actresses, and would love to see more stories from them... this new movie will follow the trajectory of the original film."
Here's the teaser. 'Ghostbusters 3' is expected at some stage in the summer of 2020. And yes, that's the same music when Zuul first appears.
