Are we ready to see another man in the purple suit and facepaint?
Jared Leto is reportedly in talks to play the infamous Joker, as part of the upcoming DC Comics' Suicide Squad film with Fury's David Ayer directing.
Leto was previously in the running for Marvel's Doctor Strange, however it's all but confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch will be taking that role.
For those who may be unfamiliar, the Suicide Squad is sort of like a villain's team-up. These villains take on dangerous, often fatal missions for the government in exchange for commuted sentences.
So far, Margot Robbie, Tom Hardy, Will Smith and Ryan Gosling have been approached about filling out characters, however Leto is the first we've heard attached with a character.
Initial thoughts on Leto as the Joker? It's like this. Nobody, and we mean NOBODY, can replace Heath Ledger in our minds as the Joker. Don't get us wrong - we also loved Jack Nicholson in the 1989 version, and you've got Mark Hamill's version in the animated series too.
In short, each actor brought something unique to the role. Do we see Leto doing something like this? It's hard to say. We kinda get the feeling that they wanted someone similar to Ledger and landed on Leto - rather than coming up with a new iteration of the character and finding an actor suitable for it.
That's not say Leto won't great at it. He's a fantastic actor, Dallas Buyer's Club was a triumph of a film and we're quite hopeful that he can hold his own with this. It's just we'd like to see the powers that be trying something different instead of going back to the well and dredging up Nolan / Ledger's take.
