As the awards season draws to a close this Sunday with the Oscars, the controversy surrounding this year's ceremony won't be disappearing any time soon.
Will Smith's boycott of the ceremony, together with Jada Pinkett-Smith and Spike Lee, has drawn a considerable amount of bad press down on the Academy, however it hasn't been without detractors and those against the boycott. Speaking at an awards ceremony the other day, Jamie Foxx addressed the boycott in his own humourous fashion.
"I mean, what’s the big deal? I was sitting at home with my Oscar, like ‘What’s all the hubbub?'," before he mentioned that he and fellow Oscar winner Denzel Washington Instagrammed each other's statuettes. "Me and Denzel were like, ‘Hashtag what’s the big deal? Hashtag act better.’”
It's reported that Foxx also took a swipe at Will Smith's Nigerian accent in Concussion, which was widely believed to be an Oscar contender this year. Foxx went on, saying that he was "with Sidney Poitier just a couple weeks ago, and in 1963 all he asked for was an opportunity to act... that’s all we have to do: opportunity. If you turn the camera on and say, ‘OK … win an award … and action,’ we’ll all have taken 10 steps back. It’s all about the art. Who cares about anything else?"
For his part, Smith has repeatedly stated that his boycott has nothing to do with the fact that Concussion was snubbed at this year's Oscars, claiming that Jada Pinkett-Smith would have continued her boycott regardless of whether he was nominated or not.
