Despite the fact that a poll - ran by director Guillermo Del Toro, no less - seemed to indicate that the cinemagoing public wanted to see a third Hellboy movie, the sad reality is that it just isn't going to happen.

On Twitter just a few hours ago, Del Toro broke the news that "the sequel 100% the sequel will not happen," which is damn shame for people who like slightly weird comic-book characters and films. Back in October 2016, Ron Perlman admitted that he "doesn't talk about Hellboy 3 anymore", primarily because he himself didn't seem all that interested or hopeful of it coming together.

Despite the love for the franchise, it's not all that surprising that it isn't happening. Hellboy made just $99.3 million worldwide against a production budget of $66 million, whilst the sequel - Hellboy: The Golden Army - performed slightly better, making $160 million against a production budget of $85 million.

While they both likely didn't lose money, they obviously didn't perform well enough to get Universal or Sony jazzed about going in for a third film. Del Toro, by all accounts, was open to making the film happen, but it appears that neither Ron Perlman - who plays Hellboy - or creator Mike Mignola are particularly interested in it.

It's a shame, but at least Pacific Rim: Uprising is still happening.
