We've been hearing news about an Avatar franchise for years now with as many as three sequels to the highest grossing movie of all time expected to make their way onto our screens in the coming years.
However, the release date for Avatar 2 has been regularly pushed back for the past few years to the point where it was just removed from the calendars entirely. Until now, that is.
20th Century Fox has announced an untitled film from Lightstorm Entertainment, James Cameron's production company will be released on December 21, 2018. While Fox haven't come right out and said that the release date belongs to Avatar 2, it's hard to imagine it being anything else, given that the original was also released just before Christmas in 2009 and that the last release date the film had was in December 2017.
At one point it looked like Avatar 2 was set to go up against Star Wars Episode VIII in December 2017 but it was shortly after that Fox pulled the film from the calendar.
Whether or not this release date will actually stick this time remains to be seen although we can't really count on it until we get news of the cameras rolling on James Cameron's set.
