Imagine convincing the likes of Joss Whedon and JJ Abrams to appear in your little feature length documentary film about the world of US television? That's what Irish lads Des Doyle, John Wallace and their team did, and it certainly paid off when they enjoyed quite a bit of success at San Diego Comic Con.
Their documentary Showrunners goes behind the scenes of US TV to meet the showrunners (A US term for the person who is responsible for overseeing the day to day running of a TV series - they may be credited as the executive producer too) and the team of people who surround them as they go about their work. The Black Sheep Productions, Romark Entertainment, and Junto Entertainment comes to us courtesy of Wallace, Rock Shaink, Ryan Patrick McGuffey, Jimmy Nguyen, Jason Rose, and Christof Bove.
The lads managed to score some pretty big interviews including Abrams (Lost), Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Bill Prady (The Big Bang Theory), Hart Hanson (Bones), Jane Espenson (Once Upon A Time), Matthew Carnahan (House Of Lies), Robert and Michelle King (The Good Wife), Damon Lindelof (Lost), Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica), Shawn Ryan (The Shield), David Shore (House M.D.) and Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire). That's why, as per Deadline, the rights to distribute the film across North America were eagerly snapped up by Submarine Entertainment.
"We are very excited to be working with Des Doyle and the team on their amazing behind the scenes documentary Showrunners, which reveals the seductive, yet terrifying, world of being in charge of running a television show," said Submarine’s Co-President Dan Braun. "The unprecedented access and attention to detail they achieved in this film is impressive and unique."
And to think, it all started off with a Kickstarter campaign and a bit of funding from the Irish Film Board. G'wan the lads.
