Although he's directed Saoirse Ronan in the Oscar-bait drama Brooklyn and directed two of the best episodes in an otherwise lacklustre second season of True Detective, John Crowley will always be the guy who did Intermission to us.
Sorry, John, but Intermission remains probably the best Irish crime comedy since I Went Down and we're always going to associate you with that. However, Brooklyn's critical and commercial success means that he's set to take another swing at the Academy Awards with a film adaptation of the Pullitzer-Prize winning novel, The Goldfinch.
The story follows a young boy whose mother dies in a terrorist attack on a gallery and, in the immediate aftermath, takes a famous painting on the orders of a mysterious man. The story is set over a number of years and will likely need two people to play the lead role, as it begins with the boy at 13 and ends with him at 26.
No casting has been announced as of yet, however the script by Peter Straughan - who did the excellent adaptation of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - has been completed and Crowley has signed officially to direct. No release date has been set, but expect The Goldfinch to play a huge part in the Oscars for 2018.
