To say we're excited about the Independence Day sequel (make that sequels, there's part 1 and 2) is an understatement. Though I guess we're nervous and excited in equal measure. Is this a case of leaving well enough alone, what with the original movie being such a hit, or is there more to be gained from a sequel? Well one thing's for sure, they'll certainly make some doe off of the first time round fans.
Taking place 20 years after the original - with Bill Pullman confirmed to return (woop!) - director Roland Emmerich has finally given us a taster of what to expect. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly he said:
"There may be some familiar faces in the sequels - Bill Pullman has already confirmed that he is onboard; Will Smith has not - their storylines will focus on a new generation of human heroes, including the stepson of Will Smith's Independence Day character... It's still some of the same characters, but also new younger characters; it's a little bit like the sons take over."
As for the plot? "The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back, and they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes... So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that's 20 or 25 years."
What's more, the ID sequels will boast some pretty impressive alien technology that could prove very handy in the human world: "It's a changed world. It's like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology. We don't know how to duplicate it because it’s organically-grown technology, but we know how to take an antigravity device and put it in a human airplane."
That all sounds great, but we won't be happy 'til we get word on the Fresh Prince's return (or lackthereof). How can we have Independence Day without Will Smith? That'd be like bread without butter.
