The Expendables 3 has bombed at the North American box-office, with the fact that a DVD quality version of the sequel leaked online being blamed for the failure.

The star heavy sequel took a small $16.2 million over its first 3 days of release, in a case of diminishing returns for the franchise that saw its first installment open in the mid 30s, the second in the high 20s and now the third ultimately fail all together. It's worth noting that the second film raked it in at the global box-office, surpassing the first.

While Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remained on top with Guardian's of the Galaxy in second, other new opener Let's Be Cops, starring New Girl lads Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans did stellar business. Recouping its $17 million budget, and taking $26.1 million since bowing last Wednesday.

Jeff Bridges and Meryl Street novel adaptation The Giver also under-performed, taking just $12.8 million.
