Because producers don't pat themselves on the back enough (well, that's the impression we get from Entourage) the big wigs of film have announced their nominations for this year's Producers Guild Awards.
If you've got your finger on the awards season pulse you will know that 12 Years a Slave, Gravity and Her are all hot potatoes and whaddaya know, they've all been nominated for Best Film joining American Hustle, Blue Jasmine, Captain Philips, Dallas Buyers Club, Nebraska, Saving Mr. Banks and The Wolf of Wall Street - all of which are also unsurprising, except maybe Nebraska. Although that's directed by Alexander Payne so maybe it's not so surprising after all.
Moving on to television; big budget productions American Horror Story: Asylum, Behind the Candelabra, Killing Kennedy, Phil Spector and Top of the Lake have all received nods for the prissily titled category of Long-form Television.
Highly unexpectedly Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Homeland and House of Cards have been nominated for Best Television Drama and 30 Rock (wait a minute, are these awards including defunct shows? If so, where's Twin Peaks?), Arrested Development (actually, this is unexpected), The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family and Veep are all up for Best Television Comedy.
While these awards aren't particularly interesting for ordinary movie goers like you and me, they usually indicate which productions will be included in the more glitzy affairs like the Oscars and Golden Globes. That's why we will be keeping a close eye on who wins at these awards and we will be sure to let you know the outcome.
