'Toy Story 4' hit cinemas last weekend and the box office figures are now in.
'Toy Story 4' sees Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the gang head out on (supposedly) one last hurrah). After Bonnie gets a new toy called Forky, they all head out on a road trip. Along the way, they make new friends and Woody is reunited with his old flame, Bo Peep.
The Disney Pixar sequel hit cinemas the same day as 'Child's Play' and same week as 'Brightburn' (two horror films so talk about counter programming).
According to Box Office Mojo, the family feature won the day, making $118 million in the US. With $120m in foreign receipts, it made $238m worldwide.
Studio expectations had assigned the film projections of $140+ million domestically, so it did fall short in that sense. The performance remains, however, the best of the franchise, as it beats 'Toy Story 3's $110.3 million opening from 2010.
Moreover, 'Toy Story 4' had the fourth largest animated opening of all time. We expect it'll be topped by 'Frozen 2' when that hits cinemas comes Christmastime.
With the next big animated features not hitting cinemas until July ('The Lion King') and August ('The Angry Birds 2'), 'Toy Story 4' should gain momentum at the box office among family audiences in the coming weeks.
'Child's Play', meanwhile, delivered a second place finish in the box office with an estimated $14 million. 'Aladdin' is still hanging on in third place with an estimated $12.2 million.
