'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' is also King of the Box Office. However, it under-performed in ticket sales.
'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' is the third installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse. It follows 2014's 'Godzilla' and 2017's 'Kong: Skull Island' and precedes 'Godzilla vs. Kong' in 2020.
There's not a whole lot to say about the story - it's basically a bunch of monsters fighting each other and destroying cities. Cast-wise, it's an impressive line-up between Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, Ken Watanabe, Zhang Ziyi, Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance and O'Shea Jackson.
It was number one at box office this weekend, making $179 million globally. Domestically, it brought in $49 million, a surprisingly low figure considering it opened across 4,108 locations.
It's well behind its predecessors, with 'Godzilla' having launched with $93 million while 'Kong' made $61 million. The figures also disappointed given school has ended and the film has been vying for young attendees. (considering the casting of Bobby Brown)
Its budget is $200 million, so it has yet to break even.
Interestingly, audiences are forking out to see it on the biggest screens possible with IMAX accounting for $8.1 million of domestic ticket sales.
Other high performers at the box office this weekend included Elton John biopic 'Rocketman' and horror film 'Ma'.
