Considering how coronavirus is spread through social contact and cinemas generally tend to be quite packed, it's no surprise that box office has cratered since the pandemic has spread.
Box Office Mojo reports that the global box office take has fallen to levels not seen since 1995, and with new releases held back until April 10th at the very earliest, the situation is likely to remain that way for the time being.
This coming week, for example, should have seen the release of 'A Quiet Place, Part II' and a strong third weekend for Disney's 'Onward'. In the US box office, 'Onward' fell by 73% in one weekend, which is basically unheard of.
Globally, it's about the same as well for box office figures. China, which is the world's second-biggest movie market, has closed all cinemas for the foreseeable future and will likely stay closed for at least another month, if not longer. Here in Ireland, cinemas remain open but have halved screening sizes and introduced rigorous methods to enforce social distancing.
The only ones making out in all of this, naturally, are streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+. In fact, the House of Mouse dropped 'Frozen 2' on their streaming service nearly three months early, and released 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' on home video early too.
