Fifteen years ago today, Crossroads was released. The film starred Britney Spears and was an attempt to capitalise on her singing fame and launch her acting career. Needless to say, it didn't quite work out.
Despite being ripped to shreds by the critics, the film was a moderate commercial success. It was made for $12 million and took in $61 million worldwide. The film also featured the songs 'Overprotected', 'I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman' and 'I Love Rock 'n' Roll', which all became hits for Spears.
The plot of the film is pretty basic. On the night of their high school graduation, Britney and her now estranged childhood besties reunite and decide to take a road trip to California. It's about friendship, finding yourself and growing up. Even if you've never seen it, you probably get the idea. The script was written by Shonda Rhimes who went on to create Grey's Anatomy, Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder.
The film boasted a pretty impressive supporting cast, both established stars and actors who have become stars in the intervening fifteen years. Here are five you might have forgotten appeared in the film:
Zoe Saldana
Saldana was at the very start of her acting career when she appeared in Crossroads; it was her third feature film role. She played Kit, one of the best friends, and the most popular girl in school. Crossroads may not have been her big break, but she's been doing alright for herself ever since.
Taryn Manning
Britney's other best friend, Mimi, was played by Taryn Manning. Manning is best known today for her role as Pennsatucky in Orange Is The New Black, but can also be seen in Sons Of Anarchy and TV reboot of Hawaii Five-0. The same year as Crossroads came out, she appeared alongside Eminem in 8 Mile.
Dan Aykroyd
Aykroyd played Britney's single parent father. When she fails to tell him about the roadtrip, he panics, but they make up just in time for film's emotional ending.
Kim Cattrall
Kim Cattrall was at height of her Sex and the City fame when she showed up very briefly as Britney's estranged mother.
Justin Long
Long had a small role at the start of the film as a high school student. Like Saldana, Crossroads was one of his first film roles.
