Empire Magazine has seen Quentin Tarantino’s war epic Inglourious Basterds at Cannes, and has been raving about the film. Reliable reviewer Christ Hewitt spewed that it was: "a wonderfully-acted movie that subverts expectation at every turn. And it may represent the most confident, audacious writing and directing of QT's career." He also added that it was "an action movie that has barely any action." It does appear to be very much Tarantino, though, with his offbeat taste in music and penchant for the self indulgent plainly evident. Apparently there is the usual on-screen captioning, while he also messes with the chronologic order, and a voice over appears from nowhere. In saying that, self indulgent to some is genius to others, so I’m looking forward to seeing this and making up my own mind. The film opens here in August.
