The rumour mill is in high gear when it comes to the making of the Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation. The latest news from Deadline confirms that the most recent contender for director of the flick Joe Wright (Anna Karenina, Atonement) who we lastly predicted as in the run, will not be involved due to other work commitments. In other words, he has better things to do than this sad sack of a story painted as liberating for the public. Back to square one it is then. Frustration station eh?
Those to be thrust into the bear pit pf possible career failure next are Bennett Miller (Moneyball), Patty Jenkins (Monster) and Gus Van Sant ( My Own Private Idaho, Milk). The only one we would put our money on accepting it would be Bennett Miller because the other two are far too proud of their art house tendencies to accept this right?
Van Sant is all about the grit and Fifty Shades is all veneer and clinical sexuality expressed in the muffles of bad writing. However, according to Digital Spy, the Milk director has already filmed a test screen scene so maybe making films about gay hustlers and dead gay politicians no longer pays off.
Just to ensure the film will be a complete nightmare, it's going to ruin our childhood associations too as the screenwriter Kelly Marcel is also attached to the upcoming flick Saving Mr Banks, a bio drama based on the making of Mary Poppins. Mary Poppins! Sure the name invokes a lot of euphemisms but is this not a queasy switch to make?
Fifty Shades of Grey will be produced by Michael De Luca and Dana (not that Dana) Brunetti. With so many people jumping ship as director however, it's going to be as rough a ride as Christian Grey. Click here to see the lineup for the film.
