Although we've said repeatedly that the prequel trilogy of Star Wars was an affront to everything that came before (or after), there were some moments in it where it had potential.
The podracing scene in The Phantom Menace was expertly staged, the Slave I chase in Attack of the Clones and seeing Christopher Lee get his head lobbed off in Revenge of the Sith was pretty shocking, to say the least.
Speaking of casting, some of it was pretty spot-on - including Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, taking on the role made famous by Alec Guinness. The last time we saw Ewan McGregor in the role was Revenge of the Sith, where Kenobi was settling for his retirement and then, as we know, came A New Hope and joined the two trilogies together.
What with the looming Rogue One - which is set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope - and the upcoming Young Han Solo movie with Alden Ehrenreich, there's been talk of a standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi movie with Ewan McGregor reprising his role.
In a recent interview with French magazine Premiere, McGregor admitted that he's open to the possibility of returning to a galaxy far, far away. "It would be fun to film that story now [that] I'm older... I’d be the right age. I’m forty-five, Alec Guinness was what, sixty? I could do two of them!"
McGregor went on, saying that he hopes the new films explore different genres, but admits that nobody in Disney or Lucasfilm has officially approached him on the topic. It's hard to know whether or not a Ben Kenobi standalone film would work, primarily because there's a fear that you could hit saturation point very quickly - much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What's kept the MCU relevant is that it's attempted to funnel different genres and approaches to each film; Guardians of the Galaxy was a sci-fi comedy, Winter Soldier was a '70s conspiracy thriller, Doctor Strange looks like a Jodorowsky film - so the same approach should be taken with Star Wars.
Already, what we've seen of Rogue One makes it look like a military thriller so an Obi-Wan Kenobi story could look like a David Lean drama ala Lawrence Of Arabia? Who knows.
