Hawke is set to follow in the steps of David Bowie and Nicholas Hoult in playing the eccentric electricity pioneer.
The creatively titled ‘Tesla’ will be introduced to buyers at the European Film Market in Berlin this weekend with Ethan Hawke slated to take on the leading role.
It will see Hawke reunited with writer/director Michael Almereyda with whom he collaborated with on Hamlet and Cymbeline. ‘Tesla’ will chronicle the Serbian-American’s invention of the alternating current motor and his fierce rivalry with Thomas Edison.
Production is due to begin on the project in New York this Spring.
Hoult played Tesla in The Current War while Bowie memorably portrayed him in The Prestige.
