The Pitch Perfect 2 director was criticised for falsely claiming that Spielberg had never had a female lead in one of his movies. He cast Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey in the Oscar nominated ‘The Color Purple’.
Banks made the comments at the podium of an awards show honouring women in film and was immediately corrected by a member of the audience. Awkward.
“I went to Indiana Jones and Jaws and every movie Steven Spielberg ever made and, by the way, he’s never made a movie with a female lead. Sorry, Steven. I don’t mean to call your ass out, but it’s true,” she said.
She later took to Twitter to apologise:
