Although Tom Cruise may be the world's most famous Scientologist, the actor has gone a long way to distance himself from the organisation of late.

With the premiere of HBO's Going Clear, a spotlight has yet again been levelled on the Church of Scientology.

Here's several well-known actors who are also "Operating Thetans." That's what Scientologists call themselves. No, really.

8. GIOVANNI RIBISI

Yes, Phoebe's half-brother is one. The actor - and his actor sister Marissa - were raised as Scientologists by their parents. Giovanni's father was a keyboardist in a one-hit wonder band called People! that fell apart soon after he joined the church.

7. ELISABETH MOSS

This one hit us hard. Peggy from Mad Men has been our favourite character from the long-running series.

6. ISAAC HAYES

Best known to this generation as Chef from South Park, the actor / musician parted ways with Trey Parker and Matt Stone when the long-running animation series spent an entire episode dogging in the quasi-religion. Hayes was reportedly furious and left the series. But was fine with Parker and Stone lampooning pretty much everything else. Ever.

5. LAURA PREPON

She's reinvented herself since joining the cast of Netflix's Orange Is The New Black, but it appears that Prepon became a Scientologist roughly around the time she was on That 70's Show. In fact, another castmember of the show was a Scientologist. None other than...

4. DANNY MASTERSON

Yes, Hyde from That 70's Show was and continues to be a Scientologist. His older brother, Christopher, played Francis in Malcolm In The Middle was also a member of the Church along with their young sister, Alanna. She plays Tara Chambler in AMC's The Walking Dead. The Masterson matriarch, Carol, was a talent manager and highly involved in the Church of Scientology.

3. JULIETTE LEWIS

The Natural Born Killers actress was a wildchild during the early 90's when she dated Brad Pitt and spent time in rehab for a drug problem. However, since she's been clean, Lewis has been a member of the Church. Probably explains why she had a band called Juliette Lewis and The Licks. That made no sense whatsoever.

2. JENNA ELFMAN

People of a certain vintage may remember her from Dharma & Greg, a late 90's sitcom where a free-spirited young woman who's inexplicably married to a boring, fuddy-duddy type. Well, she's a Scientologist. So, y'know, there's that. All those afternoons spent laughing along with Dharma & Greg have been a lie.

1. JASON LEE

My Name Is Earl sucked anyway. Jason Lee reportedly split with his wife, photographer Carmen Llewyn, over his "devotion" to the bizarre religion.
