Auditioning for films is a fraught process for actors and not all of them excel at it.
Very often in major franchise films, it's a gruelling experience that can go on for months and very little is given in the way of direction to actors because, well, the script isn't finished or it's being retooled with subsequent auditions. In some other cases, they flat out don't even mention what the film is and have them act out a different scene from a film.
So it went with Eddie Redmayne and his audition for The Force Awakens, which he described to Uproxx as "a hilarious moment."
"With films that top secret, they don’t give you the actual lines. So they give you a scene from Pride and Prejudice, but then they tell you you’re auditioning for the baddie. If you’re me, you then put some ridiculous voice on."
As Redmayne describes it, the interview didn't exactly go over with casting impresario Nina Gold. According to Redmayne, "she was just sitting there and I was trying again and again with different versions of my kind of “koohh paaaah” [Darth Vader breathing sound] voice. And after like ten shots she’s like, “You got anything else?” I was like, 'no'."
Oof. Hey, maybe it's for the best. After all, could you imagine Eddie Redmayne as Kylo Ren? We sure couldn't. What's even more surprising is the fact that he wasn't even considered to play the role of General Hux. That went to our own Domhnall Gleeson, who did a bang-up job of playing a terrifying space fascist with a British accent.
Top drawer stuff, and we're not even kidding. Take a look, like.
