The departure of Seth Grahame-Smith from The Flash's first solo outing was not the best news to come out of Warner Bros. after the poor critical reception to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
But they've responded well by bringing in Rick Famuyiwa to take over the reigns. Famuyiwa was the writer/director of the excellent Dope which was nominated for the Grand Jury prize at Sundance. He'll be directing from Grahame-Smith's script but is likely to put his own stamp on it before filming begins.
The Flash will next be seen in the two part Justice League movies after he was introduced in Batman v Superman via Erza Miller's brief cameo. While Famuyiwa isn't exactly known for directing tent pole movies, hiring indie directors for blockbuster franchises has worked for the likes of Marvel (who hired the Russo brothers) and Universal who recruited Colin Trevorrow to direct Jurassic World.
