As we've said many, many times, Deadpool was an absolutely smashing take on the comic-book genre and a great, funny film to boot.
What made it so? Well, a witty script and a director will to take Ryan Reynolds' charismatic comedy to different places certainly helped. Since Deadpool made a huge chunk of money for Fox, a sequel was greenlit almost immediately with both Reynolds and director Tim Miller rejoining.
However, a report in Deadline has confirmed that Miller has left Deadpool 2 over "mutual creative differences" on the film, but that - as always - it ended amicably. Miller is something of a CGI whiz, having made his career up to Deadpool in a variety of visually stunning shorts and features. Remember the opening credits for the US remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo? That was him.
In any case, this shouldn't be too much of a worry for fans as Deadpool 2 is still expected for a 2018 release and, of course, Reynolds is still signed on for the title role. The real question is, of course, why it all happened in the first place.
Most likely is that it was because it was going to be either Ryan Reynolds' way or the highway. The film revived a somewhat flagging career for him and reignited the idea that comic-book films didn't always have to solely be for every possible audience. More to the point, Reynolds spent years lobbying hard for another attempt at Deadpool and feels a certain sense of ownership over the character. The first film only made its way to the screen when a leaked demo reel for the film went viral online and had fans clamouring for a full-length version.
Miller isn't out on the street now, of course. Deadline's report continues, saying that Miller will take on an adaptation on Influx, a tech-thriller about a genius physicist who's imprisoned by a shadowy government agency for refusing to shut down an experimental technology that can bend and reflect gravity. The screenplay was written by Mark Bomback, who previously did The Wolverine and Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.
Deadpool 2 is scheduled for a January 12th, 2018 release - although with this news, it could very well be pushed back.
