Kevin Smith had the biggest opening of his career by a long shot, but still failed to take the top of the American box-office this passing weekend.

His buddy cop comedy Cop Out bowed to a respectable $18.5 million over the weekend, enough to give it second spot behind Shutter Island, which took $22 million in its second week. Other new opening was The Crazies, which nearly made its entire production budget of $20 million, as it coined a solid $16.5 million in its first three days of release.

Avatar also continued to pull in the masses, months after its initial release. It has now passed the $700 million mark domestically, but will lose 3D screens when Alice in Wonderland bows on Friday.
