Tom Hardy's 'Venom' has reached $822 million in total global earnings on the weekend just passed. This means that Sony Pictures' anti-hero affair has surpassed 'Wonder Woman'.

Not only that, 'Venom' has also overtaken Tobey Maguire's first 'Spider-Man' film, which raked in $821 million worldwide when it was released back in 2002. According to Box Office Mojo, the Tom Hardy jaunt has become the third most successful film based in the "Spider-Man Universe"; only 'Spider-Man 3' and 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' remain strong on top of the board. Is there any justice left in the world?

It seems not. 'Venom' opened in October to extremely mixed reviews, and we ourselves at entertainment.ie only gave the film one and a half stars. We said the superhero flick "doesn't so much fire on all cylinders as misfire on them constantly and the wildly jarring shifts in tone and pacing make for a completely uneven experience."

'Wonder Woman' however, which also made $821 million worldwide, garnered pretty positive reviews when it was released in 2017. We gave the film four stars, saying "the trailer doesn’t do it justice and the film far exceeds it."

With both films now set for release in 2020, it looks like the superheroes will have to face off at the box office again in the future. 'Venom 2' although not officially confirmed, is set to be released on October 2nd 2020; while 'Wonder Woman 1984' has been pushed back to June 5th of the same year.
