David Fincher has apparently held discussions about directing the huge 3D version of Cleopatra, starring Angelina Jolie, according to Deadline.com.
The project has been in development since 2006, with Jolie coming on board in June of last year. The film will be based on Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Stacy Schiff's book, Cleopatra: A Life. Both James Cameron and Paul Greengrass were in discussions to join at different points, with Fincher's tentative involvement probably a lot to do with this films producer Scott Rudin - who he worked with on The Social Network and the upcoming Girl With The Dragon Tattoo remake.
The producers are going straight to the A-list directors with this project, which is a very good sign. Fincher has never made anything remotely like this before, which is probably why he's expressing interest. How far that interest goes is anyone's guess.
