A sequel to Coming to America has long been a rumoured project, but it looks like Paramount is finally taking steps toward production.
Coming to America starred Eddie Murphy as a wealthy African prince who goes to America to find a bride so that his parents do not force him into an arranged marriage. Arsenio Hall plays the friend who accompanies him to America while James Earl Jones and John Amos also starred.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, none other than Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield, who penned the original 1988 movie, will be writing the potential sequel.
The project is still in the early stages of development, but Kevin Misher (Carrie, Public Enemies) is attached to produce.
Don’t get your hopes up just yet though – there’s has been no word on Eddie Murphy, or any of the rest of the original cast for that matter, coming on board to reprise their roles.
Murphy did recently tease a sequel on his Twitter feed before claiming it had been hacked and deleting his entire account. Still, that occurred only a month ago, and the timing of the announcement for this development seems a little coincidental.
Maybe Murphy wanted to detract attention from his involvement with the project, or maybe he really wants nothing to do with it. It's anyone's guess - watch this space.
