You've probably already caught up on most of the headline grabbing events and announcements at this year's Comic-Con (if not, there's the newly titled Avengers sequel HERE, the Superman VS Batman story HERE, and the new trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire HERE), but there was a lot more movie news revealed over the long weekend in San Diego.
Guardians of The Galaxy
Release Date: August 1st 2014
Director James Gunn (Slither, Super) was on hand to introduce his combined cast for the first time ever, including the likes of Benicio Del Toro, a newly buffed up Chris Pratt, a bald headed Karen Gillan, Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace and plenty more familiar faces. The most out-there Marvel movie to date, featuring a talking tree and a ninja racoon, this looks to be a superhero version of Star Wars. Despite only shooting for 12 days so far, they still managed to show off a sizzle reel which had the fans absolutely hollering in anticipation, with comparisons to the likes of Indiana Jones and Galaxy Quest.
X-Men: Days of Future Past
Release Date: May 23rd 2014
Deep breath... Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Ian McKellan, Patrick Stewart, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicolas Hault, Ellen Page, Anna Paquin and a host of other names and faces joined director Bryan Singer on stage to talk about the next chapter in the X-Men story. The dual-time story-line will focus on the creation of the giant robotic Sentinels who want to bring about an end to mutant freedom, and Professor X's decision to send Old Wolverine’s mind back in time into the body of Young Wolverine, leaving it up to him to recruit both Young Xavier and Magneto in order to save the day. The footage they showed off, telling that part of the story, could be described in one word: EPIC.
Godzilla
Release Date: May 7th 2014
Director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) announced that they had just finished shooting two days prior, and they came straight to San Diego to show off some footage of mass destruction that puts even this summer's city flattening blockbusters to shame. Then the international cast including Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor Johnson and Ken Watanabe rocked out to talk up the epic scale but intimate nature of the massive movie, and explain why Godzilla was their favorite cinema monster. "He was unapologetic; King Kong was always conflicted. I want to see destruction!"
The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Release Date: April 18th 2014
Andrew Garfield showed up in Spiderman's costume, before introducing footage of a much funnier Spidey toying with Paul Giamatti's bad guy The Rhino, and Jamie Foxx's shocking villain Electro going around wrecking Manhattan. There were also glimpses of Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, Chris Cooper as his dad Norman (who we all know goes on to become The Green Goblin), and some comedic scenes between Peter Parker and his Aunt May, played by Sally Field. Director Marc Webb was also on hand to ensure that despite the presence of so many potential bad guys, this wasn't going to be as bloated as the villain heavy Spiderman 3, which is a good thing!
Gravity
Release Date: October 4th 2013
This reviewer has been championing how great Gravity is going to be since first hearing about it, and the new footage screened at the Comic-Con only cements that fact. Sandra Bullock showed up to the event for the first time ever, along with director Alfonso Cuaron (Children Of Men, Harry Potter and The Prisoner Of Azkaban). The new scenes, featuring Bullock and George Clooney as two astronauts caught up in a space disaster, had everyone's jaws embedded in the floor. Expect this not only to wow the sci-fi fan-boys, but a few Oscar heads as well.
World of Warcraft
Release Date: TBC 2015
A surprise entry to the slate, the lights dimmed and the audience were greeted a "mood piece" of what we can expect in Duncan Jones' (Moon, Source Code) take on the hugely popular video game. A lone figure walks across a vast expanse, comes across a long dead fallen soldier, and as he goes to take up his shield, we hear a massive roar, and the camera spins to show a giant Troll with an even more giant hammer swinging our way! Jones informs us that shooting hasn't even begun yet, but from this taste-test, he's bang on the money so far.
Edge of Tomorrow
Release Date: June 6th 2014
Changing its title from (the admittedly confusing) All You Need Is Kill, the newly-named Edge Of Tomorrow had its leading actor Tom Cruise, actress Emily Blunt, writer Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) and director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) arrive to talk up their new alien invasion/time travel action-thriller. Showing off the gritty, complicated footage got a great reaction, but not nearly as great as when legend Bill Paxton showed up, and he and Cruise had a quote-off, which Paxton won with "It's game over, man!" Nerd-gasms could be heard across the world.
Dawn of The Planet of The Apes
Release Date: May 21st 2014
Director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In) was on hand with some of the movies stars - Keri Russell, Jason Clarke and monkey man himself Andy Serkis - to show off footage of a nearly annihilated man-kind (remember that pesky, globe hopping virus at the end of the first movie?) being put into captivity by the even more advanced primates. No sign of James Franco, but Gary Oldman did show up in the footage, looking quite pensive in a bombed out building. Oh dear.
Thor: The Dark World
Release Date: October 30th 2013
Tom Hiddleston came out on stage, decked out in his Loki garb, and ordered the audience to kneel. "Kneel! Your ears yearn for untold stories. Your eyes crave unseen sights. Your imaginations ache and hunger. Where are your Avengers now? Claim loyalty to me and I will give you what you need. Say my name! It seems I have an army. Feast your eyes!" And then came the footage, with plenty of Chris Hemsworth acting the swaggering God, Natalie Portman acting the damsel in distress and, of course, Tom Hiddleston acting the maggot.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Release Date: April 4th 2014
The presence of star Robert Redford assured us that co-directors The Russo Brothers (Community, Arrested Development) were aiming for a more "70s esque political thriller", since Redford was in so many of the better ones. But that's not to say that the footage on show wasn’t action packed, and the directors and cast - Chris Evans, Scarlett Johannson, Samuel L Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Anthony Mackie and more - all appeared to big up Marvel’s First Avenger.
Robocop
Release Date: February 7th 2014
Not exactly greeted with loving warmth upon its announcement, the remake of Robocop saw a change in the tide of opinion once it showed off some new footage, with a similar but still quite original take on the story. For example, one of the big changes this time around is that street cop Alex Murphy doesn't actually die, and he doesn't have 100% control over his new robotic body, which should lead to some very heady questions about the misuse of power. Director Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) and some of the cast, including new Robocop Joel Kinnaman, his movie wife Abbie Cornish, seemingly in everything this year Samuel L Jackson, and the endlessly awesome Michael Keaton were all in attendance. But sure they all played second fiddle to the reveal of the new ED-209 in action.
I, Frankenstein
Release Date: January 22nd 2014
From the writer of Underworld comes this modern telling of the neck-bolted undead giant, this time played by Aaron Eckhart, who is caught up in a war between gargoyles and demons (as opposed to Underworld's vampires and werewolves), and both of these camps of monsters want to know the secret to Frankenstein's immortality. But this version of Franky isn't just a lumbering derp, he's totally able to kick ass via his mastery of stick-based kung-fu. Director Stuart Beattie (writer of Pirates Of The Caribbean, 30 Days Of Night and Collateral), Eckhart and his leading lady Yvonne Strahovski were at Comic-Con to big up what sounds like the most insanely fun movie on show.
300: Rise of an Empire
Release Date: March 5th 2014
Director Noam Murro (Smart People), and cast members Rodrigo Santoro, Eva Green and Sullivan Stapleton announced that their sequel to the speed up/slow down, lots-of-abs original is basically 300 zoomed out: "It takes place at the same time, but it's bigger and gives a different scale." Telling the story of how Xerxes came to be so evil, as well as showing Gerard Butler's now widowed wife Queen Gorgo lighting the fires to start a new assault against the Persians, this will be a big hit with anyone who loved the overly graphically violent 2006 hit.
The Lego Movie
Release Date: February 6th 2014
This movie’s THREE directors - between them they have made the likes of Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street and Robot Chicken - announced that they have BIG plans for The Lego Movie franchise, showing off a fake casting video of the superstar Lego characters. Superman (voiced by Channing Tatum), Green Lantern (Jonah Hill) and, for the first time ever in a movie, Wonder Woman (Cobie Smulders) are just some of the new pieces we can expect to see. How they managed to get the rights to them all, we'll never know, but good work all the same!
