Avengers: Infinity War is due to hit Irish cinemas 27 April of this year and after that the end is in sight.
Avengers 4, which is currently untitled, will mark the conclusion of Marvel’s Phase Three of feature films, and will see the threads of antagonist Thanos’s plot come together at last.
The fourth Avengers movie could also mark the departure of one of the most significant members of the superhero team – Thor. Chris Hemsworth was asked by USA Today if the upcoming movie really is the final chapter for the God of Thunder.
“Contractually, right now — yeah, this is it. I’m done. I won’t be playing the character again,” answered Hemsworth.
“It's sort of a scary thought. This really seemed like this never-ending thing. And now it's potentially finishing.”
Fans could be particularly disappointed to hear this after the success of Thor: Ragnarok last summer. The box office hit breathed new life into the character, giving the superhero a warmth and sense of humour that wasn’t as present in the first Thor movie in 2011 or the second instalment, Thor: The Dark World.
The revamp was largely thanks to Taika Waititi’s direction and as luck would have it, there may still be hope for another Thor outing as Hemsworth and Waititi have discussed the matter.
“We gave cheers ... a few times," Hemsworth said on celebrating New Years with the director. “To Thor 3, but it also was like, 'What could we do with four? We could do this and this.' We were throwing ideas around.”
“I felt like we re-invented [Thor]," Hemsworth continued. “There is a bigger platform now to continue if we want to.
“[Marvel Studios president Kevin] Feige said, 'Look, we just have to concentrate on [Avengers] now. So who knows? There are 76 cast members in these two Avengers films. They will be the biggest films of all time, far bigger than my character. It's a conversation for further down the road, if it was going to happen.”
Here’s hoping!
