There’s always something that can be added to the outcries that Hollywood has no original ideas anymore, and the outrage that all our childhood favourites are being ruined by reboots.
A sequel to Gremlins, that 80s classic and one of the best alternative Christmas movies going, is in the works (no, we don’t mean Gremlins 2: The New Batch).
There has been talk of a reboot for a while now but now Chris Columbus – who in the past directed the likes of Home Alone and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and wrote the screenplays for Gremlins and The Goonies – confirmed that momentum is building around the project in an interview with Metro US.
Mind you, it’s early days as Columbus said “"Gremlins" we are actively talking about that. So that’s what I am working on with my production company 1492 Pictures.”
He added: “It will almost definitely be a reboot.”
The director was also queried about a sequel to another favourite of his, The Goonies, which has also been rumoured, but he has seemingly dismissed the idea saying that it’s “a difficult one” and that “the actors have gotten older and chosen different careers.” So that’s at least one of the movies from your childhood safe. For now.
