'Bohemian Rhapsody' is showing no signs of lag yet, as China finally gets a late release of the Queen biopic.
According to figures released from The Hollywood Reporter, Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury is still raking in the cash at cinemas worldwide. Releasing nearly six months ago in October, 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is only just breaking the Chinese film market to amazing success.
Now the 4th biggest title for 20th Century Fox (R.I.P.) the music biopic has passed $900 million worldwide just over the weekend. That works out to be more than €795 million.
China has seen sales of $13.9 (€12.2) million so far, while Japan is still enjoying the movie in theatres, earning over $115.9 (€102.4) million to date. Add to that a cool $216.2 (€191) million the movie made in North America, and $685.2 (€605.5) million overseas, and it's no wonder 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is the single-biggest biopic to ever be released.
Following the success of the Queen and Freddie Mercury biopic, film studios have been scrambling to secure even more music and singing-based movies for audiences in the future. 'Rocketman' based on Elton John is coming later this year; while director Danny Boyle will release a Beatles-based movie 'Yesterday' in 2019 too. There's also a biopic based on the rock band Journey in the works from 'Crazy Rich Asians' director Jon M. Chu that is in its early stages.
