Del Toro and Fox have ended talks for the former to star in The Predator, a reboot/sequel of the alien action movie series.
Details of the parting of ways were not revealed but it is being speculated that it was due to scheduling conflicts (one of the projects del Toro is due to shoot includes the sequel to Sicario).
The actor’s credits include The Usual Suspects, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Snatch and Che, and he was in talks to play the lead, an ‘alien hunter’.
In any case, Twentieth Century Fox are spending no time mourning the loss as they move on to considering who could replace him.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, none other than Boyd Holbrook, one of the stars of Netflix's hit drug cartel series Narcos, is up for the role. THR writes: ‘While Holbrook does not have the star power Del Toro has, Fox is planning on beefing up the supporting cast.’
Holbrook was also seen earlier this week in promo pics for Logan, the new Wolverine movie. He is due to play bad guy Donald Pierce in the film so things are definitely looking up for the actor.
The original Predator film was released in 1987 and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers. Since then, it has been followed by direct sequels Predator 2 in 1990 and Predators in 2010 (There have also been the Alien v Predator films but we’ll just pretend those didn’t happen…).
The Predator is due for release 9 February 2018. The film is being helmed by The Nice Guys and Iron Man 3 director Shane Black, who has a close connection to the series as he starred in the 1987 film alongside Schwarzenegger.
