Anyone who saw the original Ben-Hur undoubtedly rolled their eyes at the thoughts of the remake by Timur Bekmambetov.
After all, the 1959 film still absolutely holds up today and it's easily one of the best films ever made - so why exactly would you even WANT to remake it? Christians, apparently. The film was specifically targeted to "faith-based" audiences, but it now looks like God has abandoned the producers as Ben-Hur is now on track to lose a whopping $100 million at the box-office.
Variety's sources state that Ben-Hur, which was produced by IFTA Award recipient Roma Downey, will pretty much crater at the box-office in the US. On its opening weekend, Ben-Hur came in third place and raked in a measly $11 million. However, other sources believe that the film will fare better overseas and on DVD and Blu-Ray than it did in cinemas.
As it stands, Ben-Hur currently sits at 38% on Metacritic and has a total box-office so far of just under $20 million against a $100 million production budget.
WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW, PRODUCERS?!
