Now that True Detective is more or less done and dusted, screenwriter Nic Pizzolatto is moving away from television and on to films.
Having already scripted the so-so remake of The Magnificent Seven, the long-awaited adaptation of his novel Galveston is next up for production. When we spoke with director John Crowley a while ago, he mentioned that he was initially in the running to direct it as he worked with Pizzolatto on True Detective, but it now appears that Inglorious Basterds' star Melanie Laurent is now in the director's chair.
A report by THR confirms that Laurent is directing Pizzolatto's screenplay with Ben Foster and Elle Fanning signed on to star. Foster will play a debt collector who's on the run from his loan shark boss and strikes up a relationship with a vulnerable young prostitute, played by Fanning. No other roles have been announced or cast as of yet, however production is due to begin in January.
Laurent has directed two feature films so far, both in French, and a number of documentaries. However, Galveston will mark her first English-language film and directing one of the most hotly-tipped screenplays is definitely a big get.
Here's hoping it works out.
