With Robert Pattinson set to step into the cape and cowl in the next couple of years, the details of Ben Affleck's never-was 'Batman' movie have come to light.
In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, cinematographer Robert Richardson confirmed some of the rumours that had been circulating on Affleck's 'Batman'. For one, Arkham Asylum - which featured in the likes of 'Batman Begins' and, er, 'Batman Forever' - would have played a major part. As Richardson tells it, Affleck's plot was "going more into the insanity aspects."
"So I think you would’ve seen something a little darker than what we’ve seen in the past and more into the individual, who was inside Batman – what element may be sane and what element may actually not be sane. So he was entering into a little more of the Arkham, as you know, he’s going into where you keep everyone who was bad... it was very fascinating to go to the darker side of Batman."
Plot details on the upcoming 'Batman' movie, directed by Matt Reeves, are practically non-existent - bar one or two unconfirmed points. However, it is known that Reeves' script was begun from scratch, with Affleck's script being completely discarded - so it's highly unlikely you'll see anything close to this with Robert Pattinson. That said, Todd Phillips' upcoming 'Joker' movie is understood to heavily feature Arkham Asylum, and will delve into the scarred psyche of Joker.
'Joker' hits Irish cinemas on October 4th.
