It’s clear from one glance at Edgar Wright’s credits to date, which include recent hit ‘Baby Driver’ as well as ‘Shaun of the Dead’, ‘Ant-Man’, and ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ (plus music videos for Beck, Pharrell Williams, Mint Royale and the Bluetones), that his love of music is tantamount to his love of filmmaking. Thus it comes as little surprise that his next project is a rock-doc, or rockumentary, if you will.
The film will be a documentary feature on the cult pop-rock band Sparks, Wright revealed to Indiewire.
Sparks was formed in 1972 by brothers Ron and Russell Mael. They reached number two on the UK Top 40 in 1974 with ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us’. Their latest album, 2017’s ‘Hippopotamus’, is their 23rd.
The director said that he is currently gathering archival material on the band for the project and shot the Los Angeles band’s May concert at the O2 Forum Kentish Town in London as part of the documentary.
Wright told Indiewire: “I already shot their London concert in late May. The rest of is it [to be determined] and we’re currently scouring the archives.
“I have been a fan of them since I saw them on Top Of The Pops in 1979 — and when I had ‘Beat The Clock’ on vinyl.”
The rockumentary marks Wright’s first ever documentary and first movie since ‘Baby Driver’, which was a major hit last summer when it made $226.9 million at the box office off a $34 million budget.
At the start of the year, he shared a gas ‘Baby Driver’-inspired car sign he saw and in recent months, he shared a Spotify playlist of his favourite moments in movie music.
