It's been a record breaking Christmas, and year, at the box-office. The North American box office totalled a staggering $10 billion this year for the first time, as cinema goers spit in the face of the recession.

A big reason for the monumental end-of-year push is Avatar, which had a huge second weekend taking pretty much the same amount of money in its sophomore week as it did in its first ($75 million). The domestic total for the flick stands at a huge $212 million, while the worldwide tally has shot over $610 million - giving Cameron another shot at breaking the billion dollar mark. It also bodes well for an Avatar sequel, as folk can't seem to get enough of the science fiction epic and are going back for repeat viewings.

Other new openers Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 also hit serious paydirt, as they grossed a stellar $62.4 million and $48 million respectively. The week between Christmas Day and New Years is considered the biggest in terms of ticket sales, so expect all three films to continue to pull in cinema goers.
