'An Cailín Ciúin' has enjoyed major critical and audience acclaim, and now the film has hit another milestone - it has made €1 million at the box office.

The film was released in May to critical acclaim, and the film has become a strong word-of-mouth hit over the last few months.

'An Cailín Ciúin' has become the most successful Irish language film of all time, in what is a major milestone for the language on screen.

Colm Bairéad's film dominated this year's IFTA awards, taking home 7 awards, and has gone from strength to strength since debuting at the Berlin Film Festival in February.

Bairéad and Producer Cleona Ní Chrualaoi of Inscéal said: "we are truly humbled by the manner in which audiences in Ireland and the UK have embraced our film."

"To every single person who bought a ticket for An Cailín Ciúin and who championed the film since its release in May, we say thank you from the bottom of our hearts."

"Huge thanks and congratulations to our fantastic Irish and UK distributors, Break Out Pictures and Curzon, who continue to work incredibly hard on the release."

"We are enormously grateful to all the cinemas who have allowed the film the time and space to grow and to Access Cinema for its extraordinary work in making the film available to local audiences. We owe an enormous debt of gratitude also to Claire Keegan for allowing us to adapt her work to the screen. The film's success is testament to the truly universal work she created in "Foster," they said.

'An Cailín Ciúin' was recently selected as Ireland's entry for this year's Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category, where it faces strong competition against 'Decision To Leave' from South Korea, and the Mexican film 'Bardo'.

Should the film be nominated, it would be Ireland's first nomination in the category.

Previous winners in the category include blockbusters such as 'Parasite', 'Roma', 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' and 'The Lives Of Others'.

The selection process will select 5 films from around the world, with the winner announced at the ceremony next March.
