To put that into words, that's just under one billion dollars. Spread that out over four movies and you're talking $250 million a movie - which is pretty hectic, when you think about it.

Deadline is reporting that production on four - count them, FOUR - Avatar sequels has kicked off this week, with James Cameron set to direct all of them and in sequence. Granted, this isn't the first time a trilogy, if you like, has been filmed back-to-back the way Cameron is attempting.

Peter Jackson filmed all three Lord of the Rings movies one after the other, and Return of the King ended up with an Oscar by the end of it - so, quite simply, it's possible to do it this way and make it work.

James Cameron hasn't made a film since 2009's Avatar, and there was a gap of twelve years between it and that other little film he made called Titanic. Whether he pulls off the same critical and commercial success he had with Titanic remains to be seen, but one thing's for certain - there's going to be a lot of blue aliens at your local cinema in the near future.

Avatar 2 hits cinemas in 2020, Avatar 3 goes out in 2021 and Avatar 4 and 5 hit cinemas in 2024 and 2025.
