Batman is celebrating his 75th birthday this year, and one of the most iconic versions of his story, Tim Burton's 1989 classic, is getting dolled up for the occasion too.
Warner Bros. have announced that a special edition of Tim Burton's Batman will be released on Blu Ray later this year to mark the 25th anniversary of the movie's release. The move is a part of a larger push of the character overall, given that the Dark Knight is celebrating his 75th birthday this year, and they have already released the animated Son of Batman, based on the popular graphic novel by Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert.
They will also be re-releasing the complete box set of the 1960s TV show in addition to the Burton movie, but the two are fairly far apart when it comes to tone. Micheal Keaton stars as Wayne/The Caped Crusader, while Jack Nicholson's dark portrayal of the Joker has been defining ever since. Kim Basinger also features as Vicki Vale, while the soundtrack was written by Danny Elfman and even had tracks from Prince on there too. The special edition will include also a documentary chronicling the movie, entitled Batman: The Birth of the Modern Blockbuster.
The character has become a phenomenon since the 1989 movie, unshackling itself in the public consciousness from the 1960s camp show, and spawning a number of sequels in the same vein, a hugely successful reboot, an animated series (which is still one of the best versions of the character in our humble opinion), video games and a whole lot more. Speaking of the animated series, legendary producer Bruce Timm made this short to celebrate the anniversary early this year, which is worth a little watch we feel.
The special anniversary edition should hit shelves some time in November (right before Christmas, which is weird) and is supposed to cost around $25, so we're guessing somewhere around the €20 mark, hopefully.
