Disney really has no classic that it will leave untouched. The studio is now planning a live-action, CGI-hybrid reboot (akin to the forthcoming ‘The Lion King’ remake) of 'Lady and the Tramp' because who doesn’t love a movie about adorable doggies (sure there are two in cinemas right now between ‘Show Dogs’ and ‘Patrick’).
It has been announced that Justin Theroux (‘Mulholland Drive,’ ‘The Leftovers’) is in final talks to play the eponymous Tramp in the remake. The leading Lady is yet to be found.
The movie is expected to debut on Disney’s upcoming streaming service once it launches in late 2019. It is not expected to have a theatrical release.
Collider broke the news, adding that Emmy-nominated actress Ashley Jensen (best-known for her role opposite Ricky Gervais in ‘Extras’) will co-star and lend her voice to a Scottish Terrier named Jackie, one of Lady’s closest friends. In the original movie, the character was male and named Jock.
Remember, this little guy?
Charlie Bean (‘The LEGO Ninjago Movie’, which also starred Theroux) is directing from a script by Andrew Bujalski, and Brigham Taylor is producing the film.
The original ‘Lady and the Tramp’ was released in 1955 and followed the romantic tale of an uptown Cocker Spaniel and a streetwise Mutt.
We wonder if the song about the Siamese cats will make it into the remake...
