300: Rise of an Empire destroyed the box-office both domestically and globally this passing weekend, managing to pull in a phenomenal $133 million - with about $45 million of that coming from the US.
Elsewhere at US cinemas, the already released here Mr. Peabody and Sherman did solid business coining an estimated £32.5 million; proving that the appetite for family flicks isn’t showing any sign of waning after The LEGO Movie, Frozen and Despicable Me 2 all hit paydirt.
A record was broken over the weekend, though, as Wes Anderson’s superb Grand Budapest Hotel opened in limited theatres in New York and LA (4 to be precise) and raked in a staggering $200,000, for a stunning per screen average. Word of mouth will only turn this wonderful film into even more of a sleeper hit.
Next week sees the US bows of game adaptation Need for Speed, Jake Gyllenhaal’s latest collaboration with his Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve, Enemy; and the big screen version of Veronica Mars - which also premieres on VOD.
