Easily one of the most competitive Oscars in recent years, last night's Academy Awards saw - for the most part - the right people and films win out.

Spotlight snagged Best Picture, beating out tough competition from The Big Short, The Revenant and our own Room whilst Leonardo DiCaprio FINALLY won Best Actor for his searing, physical performance in The Revenant. Brie Larson, meanwhile, won Best Actress in the Lenny Abrahamson-directed Room whilst Adam McKay and Charles Randolph scooped Best Adapted Screenplay, beating our own Emma Donoghue for Room.

The big upset on the night, however, was Mark Rylance scooping Best Supporting Actor and beating the bookies' favourite, Sylvester Stallone, for Creed.

As for Irish winners, there was one on the night; Dubliner Benjamin Cleary won Best Action Short for The Stutterer, a short film which was written, directed, edited and largely funded by himself.
