Now that the dust has settled after a whirlwind 24 hours of talking about the matter, the man in question has publicly apologised for reacting "emotionally".

Will Smith has issued an apology to all involved in Sunday night's one-sided slapping match.

Rather unfortunately, the 94th Academy Awards night was marred by the moment Smith walked up on stage to slap Chris Rock for making a swipe at his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith. For a rundown of everything else that happened on the night, including all of the milestones that occurred, we've done a solid recap here.

Smith took to Instagram early this morning to share his apology, saying his behaviour during that moment was "unacceptable and inexcusable". He also said he feels "embarrassed".

The full statement from the newly-crowned Oscar winner reads: "Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behaviour at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.

"I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.

"I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my 'King Richard' Family. I deeply regret that my behaviour has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.

"I am a work in progress. Sincerely, Will"

Following the incident, Chris Rock decided not to press charges against the actor. The Academy also issued a statement that said they don't "condone violence of any form".

In other Will Smith slap news, his former neighbour Liam Payne of One Direction fame decided to give his reaction to the story. Let's just say it's worth watching for how perplexing it all was.
